IGNORANCE OF SCRIPTURE IS IGNORANCE OF CHRIST – St. Jerome

With the Synod Fathers, I express my heartfelt hope for the flowering of “a new season of greater love for sacred Scripture on the part of every member of the People of God, so that their prayerful and faith-filled reading of the Bible will, with time, deepen their personal relationship with Jesus”.

~ Pope Benedict XVI, ‘Verbum Domini,’ Apostolic Exhortation on the Word of God

PARISH BIBLES

In a radical move, our Parish is transitioning from the use of Missals to using the Bible itself for the Liturgy of the Word at Holy Mass. In collaboration with the Canadian Bible Society, we are providing parishioners with a Bible published specifically for St. Joseph the Worker Parish.

This is a Catholic Christian Bible
This Bible contains all 73 books (46 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament). Protestant Bibles are missing seven whole books in the Old Testament (Tobit, Judith, 1 Maccabees, 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach and Baruch) and portions of two more (Daniel and Esther). These excluded texts are known as the “Deuterocanonicals”. The Catholic Church, through the intercession of the Holy Spirit, discerned that these books were divinely inspired and included them in the Bible in the year 382 AD at the Council of Rome, under Pope Damasus I.

This is a Liturgical Bible
“Liturgy” means “the work of the people.” This Bible is meant both for personal use as well as for the community as a whole in worship. This Bible uses the New Revised International Version (NRSV), translated by the Bible Translation and Utilization Branch of the National Council of Churches, an ecumenical Christian group. There has also been Jewish representation in the group responsible for the Old Testament. This translation is meant to replace the Revised Standard Version, and to identify it in context with the many other English language translations available today. In accordance with the Code of Canon Law Canon 825.1, the New Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition, has the imprimatur of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops granted on 15 October 1991. Moreover, this is the adapted form of the NRSV approved by the Vatican in 2008 for the Catholic Church in Canada, meaning this is the same text, word by word, proclaimed at Holy Mass.

This is a Parish Bible
This Bible is published with the specific intention of meeting the spiritual needs of St. Joseph the Worker Parish. Thus, alongside the Bible will be a “Parish Companion to the Holy Bible” with the prayers of the Mass, maps, concordance, word list and an extensive resource to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ through apologetic study and devotional reading of His word.

It will have the following unique features:

~ Hardcover in burgundy
~ Large print; 13.5 font
~ Four red ribbons
~ Four coloured pictures
~ Gold embossed parish logo at the front of the Bible
~ NRSV Catholic translation (same as used at Mass)

“May every day of our lives thus be shaped by a renewed encounter with Christ, the Word of the Father made flesh: he stands at the beginning and the end, and ‘in him all things hold together’ (Col 1:17). Let us be silent in order to hear the Lord’s word and to meditate upon it, so that by the working of the Holy Spirit it may remain in our hearts and speak to us all the days of our lives. In this way the Church will always be renewed and rejuvenated, thanks to the word of the Lord, which remains for ever (cf. 1 Pet 1:25; Isa 40:8). Thus we too will enter into the great nuptial dialogue which concludes sacred Scripture: ‘The Spirit and the bride say: ‘Come’. And let everyone who hears say: ‘Come!’ The one who testifies to these things, says: ‘Surely I am coming soon!’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! (Rev 22:17, 20)”.

~ Pope Benedict XVI, ‘Verbum Domini,’ Apostolic Exhortation on the Word of God
